- FLT wins with application for automated sealing

Within the scope of the international trade fair Composite Europe, Fibro Läpple Technology (FLT) together with its cooperation partners DOPAG and EngRoTec was awarded the AVK innovation award at 28th November.
The prestigious award is presented by the German AVK Federation of Reinforced Plastics in the field of reinforced plastics and composites. The award recognizes products, projects and ideas in the four categories products/applications, processes/procedures and research and science as well as attractive FRP employer.
With the submission of "Sealing - Automated Sealant Application on Large-Scale CFRP Structures", the FLT was able to reach the third place in the category processes/procedures, thus competing with a multitude of top-level industry experts.
The application developed by the FLT enables an automated sealing process for large-scale CFRP parts in the aerospace industry for the first time. An optical sensor detects, measures and calculates a present gap geometry. The exact dosing and application of the sealant is carried out in the same trip. The continuous measurement allows to adjust the amount of adhesive directly to the variable gap and to check the quality at the same time. This saves time and material - and increases efficiency. The system is quite flexible and can be coupled to a robot as well as to a portal.
Besides FLT, two companies were involved in the development of the project: DOPAG integrated the dosing and mixing system vectomix and the company EngRoTec placed the sensor for the online-based web control and measurement of the gaps.
With the innovation, the FLT provides support for increased automation in the aerospace industry. The solution scores especially in terms of productivity and quality improvement. In addition, the health impact of the employees is also significantly reduced since the contact with the harmful substances of the pasty media is avoided.
